UK Researchers Find Cannabis Abstainers LESS Motivated Than Cannabis Consumers
—>This is NOT A JOKE!<—

Ms Martine Skumlien is a PhD student in the Department of Psychiatry, University of Cambridge, United Kingdom. Her research centers around the impact of regular cannabis use on brain and cognition, with a particular emphasis on use in adolescence, in which she utilizes behavioral data along with fMRI in her work.
Ms. Martine Skumlien, MRes, is a researcher affiliated with the Department of Psychiatry, University of Cambridge, Cambridge, UK -and- Clinical Psychopharmacology Unit, Clinical Educational and Health Psychology Department, University College London, London, UK, and was lead researcher of a team of 16 that recently published their findings in the 14 August 2022 edition of the peer-reviewed International Journal of Neuropsychopharmacology.
In the research entitled “Anhedonia, apathy, pleasure, and effort-based decision-making in adult and adolescent cannabis users and controls,” [also at: International Journal of Neuropsychopharmacology, pyac056, https://doi.org/10.1093/ijnp/pyac056] the results showed that non-cannabis users “had higher levels of anhedonia than cannabis users.” Anhedonia is the clinical term referring to the inability to feel or experience pleasure.
In their conclusion, the researchers wrote, “Our results suggest that cannabis use at a frequency of three to four days per week is not associated with Read the rest of this entry »

In a recently published article entitled “Grey Matter Volume Differences Associated with Extremely Low Levels of Cannabis Use in Adolescence,” in the Journal of Neuroscience, 14 January 2019 edition, pp3375-17, researchers wrote in part that “We identified extensive regions in the bilateral medial temporal lobes as well as the bilateral posterior cingulate, lingual gyri, and cerebellum that showed greater GMV in the cannabis users.”
News items related to that newly published research are focusing upon that singular line as if it’s something negative. Since when did INCREASED grey matter become something dangerous, or cause for concern? Colloquially, the term “grey matter” is used to describe the brain, and by extension, brain power. So let’s examine this matter (no pun intended) in more detail.
But before proceeding further, it bears mentioning that adolescents should NOT be consuming cannabis, neither alcohol, nor tobacco. And try as much as we want, we will not ever stop underage consumption of any adults-only substance. The BEST we can do is to educate them, and others, of potential risks involved in its use – especially and particularly underage use – and deny them opportunities to consume alcohol, tobacco, and cannabis. THAT is a strategy which has PROVEN to work, because the trite “Just say ‘no'” has never worked, nor will it ever.
Dr David Robert Grimes is a physicist, cancer researcher and science writer, who was the joint recipient of the 2014 Nature / Sense About Science Maddox Prize and wrote in a brief anti-marijuana article dated 15th May 2017 entitled “The rise of the cannabis cult: don’t believe the hype about medical marijuana” that Read the rest of this entry »

Research Shows Sex Is Good For Your Brain, Cognitive Function & Mental Health
So, Are You Fucking Smarter Every Fucking Day?
Maybe.
Could you be fucking stupid? If you are, then stop. Fuck someone smarter.
But, there’s a catch.
Fucking stupid may be good for your AND your partner’s brain. So fucking stupid might not be so fucking stupid.
Perhaps that may explain why some people in America are so fucking stupid. They’re not fucking. Hence, they’re fucking stupid.
Writing in Forbes, David DiSalvo cited a study of adults aged 50-83 which found that Read the rest of this entry »

Brain Stimulation Reduces Racial Prejudice
Racial discrimination remains to be a pressing issue across the globe. In a study published in “Brain Stimulation“, Dutch researchers have now demonstrated that racial prejudice can be reduced with brain stimulation.
Scientists at the University of Leiden, Leiden, Netherlands, conducted an experiment in 60 healthy volunteers. Half of the group received transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) with a low intensity current administered by electrodes placed on the frontal part of the scalp. The other half received sham treatment.
During the treatment, the participants were Read the rest of this entry »

Any time folks ooh & aah over how much advancement humanity has made, I am constantly reminded that we are, in many respects, comparatively speaking, still barbarians, for we know so little. There are unanswered questions galore. And it seems that the more we learn, the more we realize how much we truly do NOT know.
For example, we DO NOT know with certainty why folks become obese.
And yet, this may very well be just one part of a very complex puzzle.

In the last several years, obesity has become a rampant epidemic in the United States. While there are doubtless many causes, it is my opinion that a wholesale change in our dietary practices – and I specifically do not mean to refer to increased portion sizes, consumption or intake – but rather to an ingredient which has become all too common in commercially prepared food… which, if we were honest with ourselves, is most of what we consume.
For example, the majority of Americans do NOT grow their own vegetables, raise their own groceries (meat, dairy, poultry, eggs, pork, etc.), nor do they eat homegrown, locally grown, or even “freshly prepared” vegetables, even if those vegetables were imported to the United States. Consider even pineapples, for example. Once, the exceeding majority of the world’s supply of pineapples were grown in Hawaii. The highest quality pineapples are sold to Japanese markets, where they pay top price for the highest quality fruit. Not so in the United States, where American customers balk at high prices, even if it’s associated with higher quality.
Historically, Hawaii was the world’s largest pineapple producer and source for pineapples. Relatively recently however, rapacious corporate profit seekers abandoned Hawaii for cheaper production (translate “cheap labor” & “no health & safety regulation”), and there now remain only two fresh pineapple operations remaining in Hawaii: one on Maui, and another on Oahu. And that quandary is an entirely separate, yet related, problematic issue.
However, much of what we eat has been commercially processed in volume. And I mean in HUGE volumes! In America’s factory food processors, a fairly common ingredient is Read the rest of this entry »

For years, we’ve been told that our brains don’t regenerate, that “it’s all downhill.” However, findings over the years have slowly begun to debunk that myth. Researchers have known that physical activity contributes to decreased depressive symptoms, and can significantly improve one’s outlook and self-esteem.
Now, even more exciting is the news that physical activity – in the form of exercise – actually does improve mental ability!
So you know what you need to be doing now… right?

How Exercise Could Lead to a Better Brain
April 18, 2012
By GRETCHEN REYNOLDS
The value of mental-training games may be speculative, as Dan Hurley writes in his article on the quest to make ourselves smarter, but there is another, easy-to-achieve, scientifically proven way to make yourself smarter. Go for a walk or a swim. For more than a decade, neuroscientists and physiologists have been gathering evidence of the beneficial relationship between exercise and brainpower. But the newest findings make it clear that this isn’t just a relationship; it is the relationship. Using sophisticated technologies to examine the workings of individual neurons — and the makeup of brain matter itself — scientists in just the past few months have discovered that exercise appears to build a brain that resists physical shrinkage and enhance cognitive flexibility. Exercise, the latest neuroscience suggests, does more to bolster thinking than thinking does.
The most persuasive evidence comes from several new studies of Read the rest of this entry »

Yeah, I thought that title would kinda’ get your attention.
It’s not “gratuitous,” of course. It’s old. And besides, our elite soldiers – Delta Force, Special Operations, SEAL Team, etc. – all are trained to eat unusual food, whatever is available to be eaten.
It’s definitely nothing new.
So, is it true that Read the rest of this entry »

What!?
You can only do one thing at a time?
Welcome to the real world.
With a view toward reality and efficiency, the buzzword “multi-tasking” is on its way out.
In a study to be published this week in “Science,” a scholarly journal, neurological researchers at Universite Pierre et Marie Curie in Paris, France have discovered the brain’s Medial Frontal Cortex (MFC) divides the brain in half when it comes to performing tasks.
Automatically, that means that consciously or cognitively, our brains can only allow us do two things simultaneously.
Study researcher Etienne Koechlin said, …Continue…
