Opining upon the notion of Alabama State Senator Del Marsh’s casino gambling plan to fund Medicaid, someone wrote, “[It’s] The only voluntary tax I know of. If you don’t want to play don’t pay.”
The retort was, “I’m finding myself more open to this lately however; once someone loses their house, job, family etc., don’t come crying for taxpayers to take care of you.”
To which came this reply, “Those people are already finding ways to gamble their lives away. They don’t need a lottery.”
My response follows.
“Those people,” are the Legislators.
In this one thing, I share the Governor’s sentiment – which he ineffectually (no surprise there) communicates:
Lottery will NEVER remedy poor fiscal policy, with which Alabama is replete.
In almost every lottery situation, law demands that the proceeds from lottery are to be used to supplement – not supplant – existing revenue. And in this single instance authored by Senator Del Marsh (R, Anniston) it is being used to supplant – to replace – existing sources of revenue. And that is Read the rest of this entry »

ATTENTION ALABAMA RESIDENTS:
Please continue to fund out-of-state K-12 schools, and send Tennessee, Georgia & Florida kids to college by purchasing Tennessee, Georgia & Florida Lottery tickets.
• Today, in Tennessee, over 100,000 students benefit annually, and Republican Governor Bill Haslam signed a bill written by Republican TN legislators which will pay for 2 years of community/junior/technical college education for every Tennessee high school graduate.
• In Georgia, over 1,600,000 students have benefited from Georgia Lottery.
• In Florida, over 650,000 students have received over $4,290,000,000 since 1986 to attend higher education.

Readers may want to refer to an earlier entry entitled, “I won the Alabama Lottery!” in which I added that, “…and all I got was this lousy governor and inept Republican legislature.”
One must wonder if going to Montgomery is cause of intellectual deprivation, or if it is evidence of the same.
Either way, Alabama sucks hind teat. (That’s a colloquial farming aphorism referring to the suckling which finds itself in a very disadvantaged position.)
God help us.
The Republican legislature is doing a “Deliverance” move on its citizens. Only thing is, they’re not asking us to squeal like a pig.
It’s just what Alabama needs in the midst of 10.6% proration… more Read the rest of this entry »

Some folks would say “common sense,” and to some extent, that’s probably true.
Well… better make that “to a great extent.”
But, a state lottery is another thing Alabama ain’t got.
And, the Republicans in the legislature in the past administration and the present administration seem to have absolutely no inclination to allow the people the opportunity to vote on it… whether to have state sponsored gammlin’, that is.
Folks’ve tried to get one for education but have failed. And, in a move called “proration,” the governor this year cut all state budgets across the board by 10.6%, excluding education, because Alabama’s state constitution, for better or for worse, forbids going into debt and requires a balanced budget. Bonds are a different matter.
But, one other thing the state’s legislature doesn’t do Read the rest of this entry »

UPDATE 25July2014: See additional story following.
Here’s another chapter in our quickly growing book, “News of the Weird.”
No violence of any kind is genuinely funny. Rather, it is instead, genuinely tragic. And yet, it seems this woman – and her husband – were unstable, at least mentally. The story indicates that “Holly Lahti was arrested and charged with battery in 2003 in Kootenai County, but the prosecutor eventually dismissed the charges. Her husband was arrested on the same charge the same day, and those charges were also dismissed.”
Mystery surrounds Idaho winner of $190 million
