A Libertarian Nightmare

Posted by Warm Southern Breeze on Saturday, July 7, 2012

Typically, libertarians are described as social liberals and fiscal conservatives.

That description, while simple, is fairly accurate. For example, when it comes to illicit drugs, the call for their legalization has come not from dope-smoking hippies, or those championing marijuana for medicinal purpose, but from libertarians. And they do so precisely because of the philosophy that guides libertarianism – laissez faire, which is defined as “a policy or attitude of letting things take their own course, without interfering.” In other words, hands-off, and leave things alone. In the United States, that translates into the mantra “smaller, less intrusive government,” with “less regulation.”

However, the primary problem with such an approach is that things are never “left alone.” For when they are abandoned, they are instead subjected to a torrent of change.

So, it should come as no surprise to learn that the former global haven for such trade has discovered that legalization or turning the proverbial blind eye to such issues only serves to encourage criminality.

It’s true with marijuana – the Netherlands has embarked upon changes to their formerly liberal policy to marijuana usage precisely because it has given rise to increased crime. And by the end of this year (2012), foreigners will no longer be able to purchase marijuana at the “coffee shops.”

It’s also true with prostitution.

Authorities in the Netherlands have also found that Read the rest of this entry »

One must wonder if going to Montgomery is cause of intellectual deprivation, or if it is evidence of the same.

Either way, Alabama sucks hind teat. (That’s a colloquial farming aphorism referring to the suckling which finds itself in a very disadvantaged position.)

God help us.

The Republican legislature is doing a “Deliverance” move on its citizens. Only thing is, they’re not asking us to squeal like a pig.

It’s just what Alabama needs in the midst of 10.6% proration… more Read the rest of this entry »

Whitney Houston, dead aged 48 – Did she have to die? Should we legalize drugs?

Posted by Warm Southern Breeze on Sunday, February 12, 2012

When the news of singer Whitney Houston’s death broke last night, like many, I was saddened. No matter her cause of death, the grace and talent of her wonderful singing voice will be sorely missed.

Being connected through various social media as many are, I sought also to share on the matter. In only one case, what I found shocked and dismayed me. I do not shock easily, nor am I easily offended – if at all – yet that experience simultaneously dismayed and disgusted me.

I was literally aghast at the rapidity, level and quantity of such venomous and blatantly vitriolic attacks, not only against the deceased, but against anyone whom shared anything. I suppose in some regard, it was similar to being thrown in a lion’s den.

Considering that my friend might not have been aware of Read the rest of this entry »
