The parallels are uncannily ironic, and unmistakable.

Twins of Deception: Robert Bentley and Donald J. Trump

We recently experienced in Alabama what the nation is undergoing with President Donald J. Trump – a seemingly endless saga in which the top executive official is entangled in a web of deception that was spun to hide a scandal that is spiraling out of control. The culprit in Alabama was former governor Robert Bentley. He was attempting to cover-up a secret love affair with Rebekah Mason, a “senior political adviser” who was married to one of Bentley’s department heads.

Bentley’s twin of deception at the national level is the “real” Donald J. Trump. The parallels between the two men and their misconduct are striking and frightening.

Bentley and Trump were viewed as long-shot political candidates who ran the table to win it all. Against all odds, Bentley became Governor of Alabama and Trump became President of the United States. Both men were unprepared to govern after they won. Because of their oversized egos, arrogance and stupidity, both men became embroiled in explosive political scandals.

Bentley fell in love with his much younger paramour and used state resources, campaign funds, and “dark money” to romance her. Trump fell in love with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin and his highest-ranking KGB agents in the U.S. – Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and U.S. Ambassador Sergey Kislyak. In doing so, Trump has foolishly compromised America’s national security interests.

Bentley’s behavior as governor became increasingly erratic after we began exposing his illicit love affair with Mason in our “Forbidden Love” and “Executive Betrayal” series of investigative articles. Trump’s behavior as president became erratic after national media organizations, national security agencies, and others began to expose his questionable ties to Russia.

Bentley used state law enforcement agents in a desperate effort to find and stop the leakers who served as news sources for my articles. Shortly after taking office, Trump became obsessed with finding, stopping, and punishing the leakers who have exposed his ties to Russia.

Bentley fired Spencer Collier, the former head of the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, when Collier raised the question of whether the governor used state resources and campaign funds to romance Rebekah Mason. Trump fired James Comey, Jr., the head of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, to ease “great pressure” on him from the Bureau’s ongoing criminal investigation into his Russian ties.

Bentley’s scandal and cover-up created a toxic environment inside the governor’s office. As the cover-up began to unraveled, Bentley mistreated family members, friends, and staff members. He trusted no one beyond his lover. Trump’s cover-up activities have created a toxic environment inside the White House. As the cover-up unravels, Trump routinely undermines and demeans staffers. Like Bentley, Trump is blaming all of his self-created problems on others. Trump trusts no one in the White House beyond his daughter Ivanka and son-in-law Jared Kushner.

Both men have demonstrated a propensity to tell big lies whenever they are forced to answer key questions about the scandals that landed them in trouble. Because Bentley said he was chosen by “God” to lead Alabama, he had no hesitation in lying about his love affair. Trump, on the other hand, has found creative ways to simply dismiss his scandal as “fake news” and a “witch hunt”. He even devised an alternative version of reality called “alternative facts” to cover up his lies.

Bentley’s scandal and cover-up eventually forced him to resign. His cover-up lasted longer than Trump’s because Alabama’s weak mainstream media organizations pretended that his scandal was not newsworthy for six months after we first exposed it. Trump’s scandal and cover-up activities will likely force his resignation as well. Because Trump has repeatedly insulted and impugned the integrity of America’s national intelligence agencies, federal law enforcement establishment, and reputable national media organizations, all of them have unleashed truth squads to remove the mask of deception from Trump’s public face.

Both men lost the confidence of the public. Their poll numbers nosedived as their scandals grew. The Republican Party leadership ranks tried to ignore the indefensible behavior of Bentley and Trump for as long as they could. They eventually abandoned Bentley. They are teetering on the brink of abandoning Trump.

Special prosecutors were appointed to investigate the scandalous conduct of both men. Bentley eventually pled guilty to ethics violations and resigned in disgrace. Trump is clinging to the Presidency, for now. Like Bentley, the political baggage from Trump’s scandal will eventually become too heavy for his supporters to carry. After all, Trump is sleeping with America’s number one enemy – Russia – and privately bragging about it in recorded conversations.

We have been down this road before. We know how it will likely end.
