AT&T to allow iPhone 5 FaceTime to access Cellular network in iOS6

AT&T to Allow Free FaceTime Calls Over Cellular With Mobile Share Plan

As added incentive to sign up for its new shared data plans, AT&T announced today that it will allow iPhone users to make FaceTime video calls over its cellular network as long as they subscribe to one of the carrier’s Mobile Share data plans.

Apple Inc.’s FaceTime app on their computers – from MacBook Pro, iMac, iPad, etc. – allows video teleconferencing via WiFi. Now, AT&T is announcing plans to allow it to be used via the cellular network with iOS6 which will be released fall ’12.

AT&T said in a statement to AllThingsD, “AT&T will offer FaceTime over Cellular as an added benefit of our new Mobile Share data plans, which were created to meet customers’ growing data needs at a great value. With Mobile Share, the more data you use, the more you save. FaceTime will continue to be available over Wi-Fi for all our customers.”

Though the carrier isn’t forcing its customers to switch to a shared data plan as Verizon is, this surely will not please customers who plan on sticking with their current tiered or unlimited data plan, as they’ll only be able to use FaceTime over a Wi-Fi connection.

AT&T’s new Mobile Share plans launch next week, while the ability to make FaceTime calls over a cellular connection is a new feature of iOS 6, which will be released this fall.
