The Alpha Phi Sorority at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa has come under intense scrutiny recently after a 4 minute “recruiting” video was released on YouTube and promoted through other Social Media (SoMe) venues and sites.
Controversy erupted following publication of an OpEd entitled “‘Bama sorority video worse for women than Donald Trump,” on the AL dot com website by A.L. Bailey.
News of the wretched video quickly went “viral,” and made national and international news in numerous news outlets, from television, to radio, and the Internet.
A.L. Bailey was recently interviewed by representatives from the Alabama Media Group division of Advance Publications and a condensed version of the hour-long interview was published on their website AL dot com.
The video, which was quickly removed after having been posted (though once posted on the Internet, nothing really ever “disappears”), according to some sources, had at least 500,000 views in the day or two in which it was first available.
Following is commentary of a D.C.-based attorney friend and native Southerner whom viewed it, along with the video following the commentary.

This is at once an impressive and an appalling intro to one of those ugly interracial porn videos. At first you think it might actually be a genuine recruiting video for the University of Alabama chapter of the Alpha Phi sorority. There is a clever use of Read the rest of this entry »

Alabama is a deeply “red” state (some say “redneck,” which may also be accurate), which is to say, that the state has historically voted Republican for the past several years; all of the state’s top office holders are Republicans, and both houses of the legislature are similarly controlled by Republicans.
The website 270ToWin.com had this remark about the state’s political alignment: “Alabama became a GOP stronghold starting in 1964, voting for Democrats only in 1968 and 1976 (for native son George Wallace and Jimmy Carter, respectively). The initial shift was largely in response to white conservative voter uneasiness with the civil rights legislation that was passed in the mid-1960s, which was effectively exploited by the Republicans’ “Southern Strategy.” In 2012, Mitt Romney beat Barack Obama by about 22%, almost identical to John McCain‘s margin of victory in 2008.”
Frankly, the Democratic party in Alabama has been virtually decimated, and there are very few candidates identifying themselves with the party. Many state office-holders are running unopposed, including other Federal seats, including incumbent United States Senator Jeff Sessions.
Taking a clue from the George Wallace playbook (Wallace was a STRONG and almost constant campaigner), there are 67 reasons why I wouldn’t give Parker Griffith a strong chance at winning the governorship.
For example, has he Read the rest of this entry »

Like most folks, I’m still waiting & working for that 186′ yacht with a helicopter pad, castle on the French Riviera, garage of 26 cars, horse barn with Tennessee Walkers and Gulfstream jet.
I’ve realized that what I should do, is start preaching “prosperity” and asking for donations, promising donors that Jesus will bless them.
That way, Read the rest of this entry »

Simply type the words “Alabama tornado” into any search engine and there’ll be hundreds, if not thousands of entries returned. Add to those words “April 27, 2011” and not only will your search be further refined, but you may gain a whole new perspective on the destructive forces of nature.
Unless you’ve been hiding in a cave in Tora Bora for the last several years, or were recently buried at sea, you’ve probably read or heard about the hundreds of tornadoes that struck throughout North and Central Alabama, bringing with them resultant death, and widespread destruction.
Sure, we’ve all heard jokes about Alabama, Read the rest of this entry »

Sure… the title is a colloquialism. However, that does not make it any less true.
Only the blithely ignorant would not be aware that the South has experienced utterly devastating tornadoes recently. The utter scope, breadth, magnitude, number and extent of the literally hundreds of tornadoes that struck principally in Alabama have literally knocked the state for a loop.
Complicating matters was a hitherto unheard-of event Read the rest of this entry »

Alabama Coach Nick Saban gets angry after an illegal substitution penalty on his team in the second quarter the Iron Bowl at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa, Ala., Friday, Nov. 26, 2010. (The Birmingham News/ Mark Almond)
It seems the newest football stadium in Tuscaloosa is cursed.
And what might that curse be?
Bryant-Denny Stadium – better known as “Jordan-Hare West” – has proven to be a losing grounds for the Crimson Tide when they play the Auburn Tigers.
With the direction of Head Coach Gene Chizik, leadership of Quarterback Cameron Newton, and the fearsome quarterback sacking power of Defensive Tackle Nick Fairley, Auburn proved yet again that their end game is a powerhouse, and why they’re ranked #2 nationally, and remain undefeated, now 12-0, and 8-0 in the SEC.
Alabama was first on the board, and in a big way. Quarterback Greg McElroy drove consecutive first downs the field on each play, resulting in what turned out to be three consecutive scoring drives each time ‘Bama had possession of the ball in the first quarter. However, …Continue…
