What lessons could we learn from nicotine chewing gum?
You might be surprised.
Read on.
Having never been addicted to anything (or, anyone), the craving for a substance, other than food & water for sustenance, it interests me to understand the strong cravings that some have for non-food substances, including, for example, tobacco, spiritous beverage, or narcotics abused, or other illicit substances, including cocaine, methamphetamine, etc.
For years, I have, on a personal level, maintained that addiction was not what many were saying that it was, some years ago. And in the interim, from then until now, indeed, the definition, and our understanding of addiction has substantially changed, precisely because of our increased understanding of physiology, in conjunction with improved recognition of cause-and-effect patterns of human behavior.
For example, with smokers, they almost always fall into habituation through association with routine. Wake up, toilet, smoke, bathe, smoke. Drink coffee, smoke. Drive to work, smoke. Work a couple hours, smoke break. Work a few more, lunch break, smoke. Work a bit, smoke break. Off work, drive home, smoke. Get cleaned up, smoke. Watch teevee, smoke. Eat supper, smoke. Have cocktails/nightcap, smoke. And it all repeats itself the next day. That’s significantly serious behavioral reinforcement.
Those who make effort to quit, frequently forget the association of routine with smoking, and when determined to quit, they sometimes Read the rest of this entry »

“Taxes are what we pay for civilized society, including the chance to insure.
A penalty, on the other hand, is intended altogether to prevent the thing punished.”
On that court were Chief Justice William Howard Taft; Associate Justices Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr.; Willis Van Devanter; James C. McReynolds; Louis Brandeis; George Sutherland; Pierce Butler; Edward T. Sanford, and; Harlan F. Stone.
Holmes, Brandeis, and Taft are the only names many remember from that group.
Then-POTUS Warren G. Harding, a Republican, nominated Taft, also a Republican, to become Chief Justice (1921–1930) following the death of CJ Edward Douglass White, a Democrat, whom Taft had appointed as CJ in December 1910, while Taft was serving as President (1909–1913). Taft is, to-date, the only individual to have ever served in both positions – President, and SCOTUS Chief Justice.
But, here are a couple interesting facts:
1.) From July 4, 1901 until December 23, 1903, Taft was Governor-General of the Philippines, having been appointed by POTUS William McKinley. Having held that office previously, he should have recused himself from the 1927 case “Compañía General de Tabacos de Filipinas v. Collector of Internal Revenue.” But, he did not.
2.) Edward Douglass White served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War, was a strident segregationist, and upheld racist laws which came before the court, including the notorious Plessy v. Ferguson case which gave rise to the “separate but equal” doctrine, and reinforced racist practices in the United States.
Today, such obvious conflicts of interest would not be tolerated. And I note this with a mark of appreciation: Justice Brett Kavanaugh recently recused himself (did not participate in) from a recent case before the court, because his father held some stock in one company being represented to the court.
Technically, “involvement” at that level exclusively doesn’t violate ethics rules, but having erred on the side of caution – exercised jurisprudential reservation – is commendable. That is because it demonstrates Read the rest of this entry »

Research: Higher Wages Reduces Smoking
September 7, 2015
Raising the minimum wage could benefit health, say researchers.
A 10% increase in wages leads to a 5% decrease in the rate of smoking. That is especially true for male employees with a low level of education, report scientists from the UC Davis Health System in Sacramento in the “Annals of Epidemiology.” Moreover, the likelihood of quitting smoking increases from 17-20%.
For their study, researchers analyzed data from full time workers aged 21 to 69 in the years 1999 to 2009 and Read the rest of this entry »

Since it seems we’re on a roll with this food thing, ladies and gentlemen, may I introduce to you…
Schizophrenic science!
That’s how I describe the “don’t eat this, that or the other foods” crowd.
First, eggs were evil, because it was discovered they had cholesterol! Then, we discovered there were two kinds of cholesterol. Then, eggs were okay. But afterward, those researchers never revealed they didn’t have all the information to begin with.
Then, wine, liquor, beer and other spiritous beverage was gonna’ kill you. Then researchers said it was some stuff in the skins of grapes, which made red wine okay to drink. Then, it was proanthocyanidins (commonly called Pycnogenol® – see? They have something they wanna’ sell to you! Please refer to my previous entry entitled “Eat me… Drink me… It’ll cure what ails you! (But by law, I can’t guarantee that.)“), which was found in the seeds, later found in pine bark. Then… they later learned it was simply the alcohol itself that was beneficial. So now, it’s okay to have a beer, glass of wine, or mixed drink. “But only in moderation!,” they emphasize.
Next thing, coffee was bad for you. Now, it’s good.
Fatty fish, such as salmon, mackerel, and sardines were next up. Matter of fact, all fat was “evil!” Ban fat! Fat free this, that and the other. “No-cal,” “lo-cal,” all became the bywords of a gullible public. “All the flavor and zero calories!,” boasted some food and drink products. Lite (and less flavorful) beers followed suit. Then SMASH – Salmon, Mackerel, Anchovies, Sardines, Herring – were found to contain omega 3, 6, 9 fatty acids… which are “good for your heart/ heart healthy.” So it was okay to eat fish again.
Then carbs were evil. But it was later discovered that …Continue…
