Bentley Hoodwinks Yellowhammer News and AL.com

Alabama Governor Bentley with paramour/ Rebekah Caldwell Mason, Communications Director cum Senior Political Advisor

Once again, Governor Robert Bentley has hoodwinked Yellowhammer News and AL.com. This time, Bentley has deceived these two news organizations by providing them with a handful of sanitized text messages between Rebekah Caldwell Mason and himself in response to their separate Open Records requests for emails and text messages between the two lovers.
Like former Detroit mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, Bentley withheld the more embarrassing text messages about his illicit love affair with Rebekah from public disclosure. Of particular significance are the text messages where Bentley describes his true love for Rebekah, including a text message Bentley thought he was sending to Rebekah that he mistakenly sent to his former wife Dianne instead.

Here’s your WTF moment.
It’s not as if our nation doesn’t have enough problems already with unlimited political donations, Super PACs, and the concern for the influx of money from foreign concerns – although, SCOTUS justice Samuel Alito mouthed otherwise during the 2010 State of the Union address given by President Obama.
Retired Justice John Paul Stevens – in a speech at the University of Arkansas – said that,
“[T]he Court must then explain its abandonment of, or at least qualify its reliance upon, proposition that the identity of the speaker is an impermissible basis for regulating campaign speech,” Stevens said Wednesday night, according to prepared remarks. “It will be necessary to explain why the First Amendment provides greater protection to the campaign speech of some non-voters than to that of other non-voters.”
He further noted that the court’s majority opinion in the Citizens United case, written by Justice Anthony Kennedy, specifically did NOT address the possibility that foreign entities could bankroll U.S. elections.
There are – believe it, or else – Supreme Court Justices with level heads. One of them is Ruth Bader Ginsburg. She petitioned the SCOTUS to reconsider the Citizens United case, arguing that by granting certiorari, it “will give the court an opportunity to consider whether, in light of the huge sums currently deployed to buy candidates’ allegiance, Citizens United should continue to hold sway.”
If you think we have difficulty tracing campaign contributions now, just wait.
Now, the Federal Election Commission is about to open wide the doors to…

FEC Poised to Allow Campaign Donations Via Texts
June 7, 2012, 5:10 PM, By Amy Schatz
Giving money to political candidates could soon be just a few taps away, thanks to federal campaign-finance officials who are close to approving a plan to allow political donations via text message.
Several Federal Election Commission commissioners signaled their interest in approving a plan from two political consulting firms to allow campaigns to accept donations via text message at a meeting Thursday.
The FEC rejected a similar wireless industry proposal to allow text message donations two years ago but Read the rest of this entry »

The first-ever test of a National Emergency Alert System (EAS) will occur 2PM EST, November 9, 2011.
This test is unique in several ways. If you’re familiar with the annoying, attention-getting loud buzz tone on your radio, and the now-rare similar test on teevee and cable, you may have some idea of what to expect.
And yet, since the 1963 initiation of the Emergency Broadcast System – which became the EAS in 1994 – new communication venues have emerged – not the least of which include Internet-based sites & modes such as VOIP – including cellular telephones, SMS (text) messages, satellite television & radio, and more.
What is especially problematic with the advent of these new technologies, is that Read the rest of this entry »

The singer Cher sang and popularized a tune many years ago entitled ‘Gypsys, Tramps & Thieves.’ I considered that as a title for this entry, though I obviously did not use it.
Not that I’m concerned about offending Gypsies… or tramps and thieves, for that matter. I suppose in some way, it could be considered Equal Opportunity Offense. Not that I purposely make offense, but that some folks wear their feelings on their sleeves. And then, some wear them like a block on their shoulder – daring anyone to knock it off. In the interim, out of fear mistakenly disguised as respect, no one mentions Read the rest of this entry »

I’m a die-hard, long-time, Apple Macintosh only computer user. End of conversation. Period.
However, that hasn’t and doesn’t prevent me, or anyone else, from criticizing Apple products.
