Wise. Brave. Humble. Seekers of the common good above personal ambition. The world can’t get enough good leaders, and the best way to acquire the leaders we need in every aspect of modern life is for all of us to strive to be leaders right where we are. On this 55th World Day of Read the rest of this entry »

Get Outside Your Self, Focus On The Bigger Picture

If there were ever a patron saint for people who jump to extremes and then find balance in their lives, it would be John of God (1495-1559). First he was a wild-living soldier nearly hanged after being accused of stealing from the army. After a reprieve, he was so grateful that he Read the rest of this entry »

Service Is The Only Security

Not even the deepest, fiercest parental love can secure the future of loved ones or keep them from harm. Take Perpetua, a young mother still nursing, and her pregnant servant Felicity, who were Read the rest of this entry »

Where Is Jesus?
Posted by Warm Southern Breeze on Friday, July 28, 2017
Where does God “live”? Where do you go to find God? Jesus declared that He was the new temple, the new dwelling place of God in creation. So wherever Jesus is, God is present, too. In His body, which is the church; in the sacraments, especially the Eucharist; in love of and service to others, and in Read the rest of this entry »

You CAN!

My late father, who grew up in abject poverty in rural West Alabama in Lamar County, escaped poverty by serving in the Navy during the Korean War. Daddy said he asked his father – who had at most, a 3rd Grade education, and who, like him was well-acquainted with the backside of a mule and a plough – if he thought it would be a good idea for him to join the Navy. Daddy said that his father replied, “I think it’s a good idea. Maybe you won’t have to work as hard as I have.”
Daddy completed High School, which was almost an unheard-of thing for many in that era, especially in that location, and then went to Navy Boot Camp at San Diego, which is now San Diego Naval Air Station, where he experienced culture shock. Though he never identified it as such, his stories to me about his time there clearly indicate it was.
The idiomatic phrase “everything but the squeal” was a very real thing for him. That phrase means Read the rest of this entry »

Known vs Unknown: A Voting Rationale
Posted by Warm Southern Breeze on Monday, October 3, 2016
Someone opined that they hoped the 2016 GOP Presidential nominee would be elected.
I couldn’t disagree more.
Here’s why:
As we have suffered, never before has there been a more grotesque figure campaigning for the noble office of the President.
The candidate has never served in an office of Public Trust, nor ever served in any Elected Office. There is literally no shred of evidence of governing competency, much less experience, in any Public Office, and though our Constitution states that the minimum eligibility requirements for the office are to be “a citizen of the United States… the age of thirty-five years, and been fourteen years a resident within the United States,” we have never elected an individual as President whom has never served in any capacity of Public Trust, nor Elected Office.
And so, in that regard, the candidate is a significantly Unknown Quantity. That can be, and often is, fraught with enormous peril.
We expect Read the rest of this entry »

Reinvigorating Our Workforce
Posted by Warm Southern Breeze on Sunday, February 7, 2016
I have long advocated some type of national service for ALL – and ALL means ALL – for ALL have something to contribute.
Whether that service is by a paraplegic youth with computer skills, or a high school footballer with a strong back, or an art student with creative skills, every high school graduate can and should be expected to contribute to our nation through service to our local & state communities, and to our nation.
Were our nation to become serious about infrastructure repair & expansion, were our nation serious about jobs & employment, were our nation serious about economic vitality & personal responsibility, we would put our money where our mouth is by Read the rest of this entry »

Rand Paul, Conscription, Slavery, & Health Insurance Reform
Posted by Warm Southern Breeze on Saturday, May 14, 2011
Recently, U.S. Senator Rand Paul, a “TEA Party” Republican from Kentucky, and ophthalmologist specializing in cataract and glaucoma surgeries, LASIK procedures, and corneal transplants, was quoted as saying that “a right to healthcare… means you believe in slavery.”
Dr. Paul is the ranking member of the Senate HELP Subcommittee on Primary Health and Aging subcommittee, and made his comments at a Wednesday, May 11, 2011 hearing about emergency room use in American hospitals.
He said that, “With regard to the idea whether or not you have a right to health care you have to realize what that implies. I am a physician. You have a right to Read the rest of this entry »

The Important Purpose of Veterans Day
Posted by Warm Southern Breeze on Thursday, November 11, 2010

Soldiers of the 353rd Infantry near a church at Stenay, Meuse in France, wait for the end of hostilities. This photo was taken at 10:58 a.m., on November 11, 1918, two minutes before the armistice ending World War I went into effect.
Today is Veterans Day.
The important purpose of Veterans Day is a celebration to honor America‘s veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good.
Annually, since November 11, 1918 – the day an armistice, or temporary cessation of World War I hostilities between Allied nations and Germany became effective, on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month – America has celebrated what is now known as Veterans Day. …Continue…
