Dogs’ll eat anything.
Well, almost anything.
Yeah, they were are that bad!
You know beans’ve gotta’ be REALLY bad when even a 4-day hungry dawg won’t eat ’em!
Or, any food.

You KNOW food is genuinely bad when even a hungry dog won’t eat it!
It’s summertime, and truth be told, folks and critters don’t do much eating.
‘Cept for bears. Bears chow down during summer. They eat up, meat up, and sleep it all off over winter.
But this was the case with Read the rest of this entry »

I find it strangely fascinating that so many are so fearful… particularly in the South, and in Alabama especially.
Two days ago many celebrated Cinco de Mayo – the 5th of May – by eating out at Mexican-themed restaurants, quaffing a few margaritas, or by making Mexican-styled eats at home. It’s a way, in part, to acknowledge solidarity with our Mexican brothers and sisters and commemorating Mexico’s 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War. A turning point in Mexican struggle for independence, the firefight pitted 2000 ragtag, poorly equipped Mexicans against 6000 well equipped, battle-tested French soldiers. By the time the French retreated from the all-day battle, 500 French, and 100 Mexican lives were lost.

But May 5 also marks another significant event, largely unknown – and certainly unrecognized – by many, if not most.
On May 5, 1925 John T. Scopes was arrested in Tennessee for teaching Darwin’s Theory of Evolution.
It certainly seems Southerners have had it out for Science for quite some time.
Now, like hogs wallowing in mud, Alabama politicians want to meddle even more in the stinking pot of their own making by… well, here’s the news item: Read the rest of this entry »

Just remember…
The thing is already dead.
However, the question is: How did it do that if it was dead?
Answer: Nerves – the same way a chicken runs around after it’s head is chopped off.
Chemicals are how muscles move. It’s how our heart pumps. Chemicals move into and out of cells. In the heart, those chemicals are primarily sodium & potassium, with calcium playing a supporting role.
Energy (in the form of electrical potential) is created, released, and stored by the movement of elemental sodium, potassium & calcium into and out of cells.

The reader should understand: The cost of trying capital cases – cases in which the penalty is, or may be death – are EXCEEDINGLY more expensive than any other case, simply because of the numerous levels of mandatory appeals. Thus, by pleading guilty, and spending the rest her natural life behind bars – without the possibility of parole, and being given humane healthcare – the District Attorney, Amy Bishop and her defense attorneys have saved Madison County, Huntsville, and the State of Alabama many MILLIONS of tax dollars.
That is true, even given that she may live perhaps another 40 years – though that is highly unlikely, simply because incarceration exacts a physical toll upon a person’s life, shortening it by many years. Estimating a cost of $20,000/year (which includes the total cost of employees to guard & manage the system, cost of operations, etc.), and supposing she lives another 40 years (which is less likely, than not) the total flat-line cost would be $800,000.
A 2004 report entitled “State Prison Expenditures, 2001” by James B. Stephan, Statistician for the Bureau of Justice Statistics, Office of Justice Programs, of the Department of Justice, found that the cost of food and medical expenses, food service & utilities cost per prisoner in Alabama was $1776. Alabama’s Average Annual Operating Cost per prisoner was $8128 – THE lowest of 50 states. Other components of cost – employee cost, salaries, wages, benefits, supplies, maintenance, contractual services, and other aspects of facility operation, etc. – account for nearly 96% of all operating costs. According to the report, of all states, Alabama has the HIGHEST per-prisoner cost of utilities as a percentage of operating expenditure, at 5.7%. Perhaps it’s time to rethink solar, wind and other sources of renewable energy?

Ex-prof pleads guilty to killing Ala. colleagues
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (AP) — An ex-professor pleaded guilty Tuesday to fatally shooting three colleagues and wounding three others at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, court officials said.
Amy Bishop, 47, pleaded guilty to one count of capital murder involving two or more people and three counts of attempted murder. She had earlier pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.

Amy Bishop pleads guilty to murder and attempted murder in Madison County.
Prosecutors were seeking the death penalty against the Harvard-educated Bishop and it was not immediately clear if they would drop the penalty as part of the plea deal. Sentencing will be after arguments are heard at a hearing on Sept. 24.

Beware The ‘Cave Robber’: New Spider With Velociraptor-Like Claws Found In Oregon
By Roxanne Palmer
A mysterious organism has been found lurking in the caves and forests of the Pacific Northwest. No, it’s not a sasquatch – it’s a six-eyed spider with curved, vicious-looking claws that scientists have dubbed Trogloraptor, or “cave robber.”
In a paper published in the journal Zookeys on Friday, scientists from the arachnology lab at the California Academy of Sciences described the new critter, which is about the size of a half-dollar coin and likes to hang from simple webs on the ceilings of caves. Researchers and citizen scientist have found Trogloraptor in old-growth redwood forests and in caves across Oregon and California.
It has curved claws that are Read the rest of this entry »

A case in point for this state which also plaguing Florida with pythons and boa constrictors… non-native species that populate and because they have no natural predators, become problems.
Alabama State officials believe that a few of the Amazonian snails were likely dumped into the pond after they had grown too large for a home aquarium. Pet stores sold the snails for years, but that practice is now illegal.

Amazonian snails approaching Mobile-Tensaw Delta, may be here to stay

A clump of Amazonian apple snail eggs clings to a cattail stem at the edge of Three Mile Creek. The Telegraph Road bridge is in the background, which is slightly less than a mile from the mouth of the Mobile River. Despite three years of control efforts, the snails appear to be colonizing the lower reaches of Three Mile Creek, creeping ever closer to the Mobile-Tensaw Delta. (Press-Register/Ben Raines)
MOBILE, Alabama — The snails are winning.
The Amazonian apple snails first discovered in Mobile’s Langan Park in 2008 have steadily expanded their range downstream in Three Mile Creek, ever closer to the Mobile-Tensaw Delta. Biologists contacted by the newspaper said the snails may be here to stay, with a breeding population already too well established to eradicate.
A Press-Register survey this week found the snail’s distinctive pink egg masses in reeds surrounding the U.S. 43 bridge on Telegraph Road, less than a mile from the Mobile River, and as close to the Delta as they’ve been found.
“The farthest I’ve seen them was the trestle at the I-165 bridge, so that’s a little farther down than normal,” said Dave Armstrong, a biologist with the Alabama Division of Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries. “Obviously, they’ve migrated a little farther. That’s not good news.
Armstrong said the snails remain entrenched in the pond at Langan Park despite multiple applications of copper sulfate, which is lethal to snails but not fish and other aquatic creatures. The numbers in the pond are way down from the high point two years ago, he said, but the pond remains a breeding ground.
When wildlife officials realized that baseball-sized Amazonian snails had colonized the pond, their worst-case scenario involved the giant gastropods escaping into Three Mile Creek. Biologists fear the non-native snails because they have been shown to eat 95 percent of the aquatic vegetation in some natural systems, leaving behind murky, algae-filled water.
In the fall of 2009, dozens of snails could be seen clinging to rocks in the riffles below the pond’s dam at the edge of the park. Surveys of Three Mile Creek at the time revealed Read the rest of this entry »

“It wasn’t me.”
That’s the asinine claim being made by Dr. Amy Bishop, PhD (Harvard) – sometimes also known as Amy “Wile E. Coyote” Bishop – the former UAH Biology professor whom shot and killed three of her former colleagues, and seriously wounding three others.
No doubt, she’s working on a multiple personality disorder defense.

Sometimes, it’s difficult to have an effective title, or headline to a new entry, so I decided to have a bit’o fun with this one.
The readers will remember that at age 19 Amy Bishop killed her 18-year old brother Seth with a pump shotgun, to which I referred in previous entries – the most recent one being entitled “Amy Bishop’s Attorney Bryan Stevens – Can’t Read? Sure – just like Amy Bishop can’t shoot.”
The then-19-year-old Miss Bishop shot and killed her 18-year-old brother Seth, in the kitchen of their Braintree, MA home, after first “accidentally” discharging the same firearm in her bedroom upstairs, which blast her mother said she did not hear.
Following is Braintree Police Officer Charles N. Solimini’s recollection of the incident: …Continue…

Then, it’s discovered she killed her own brother with a 12 gauge shotgun when she was 19 and he 18… but she was never charged because then-District Attorney William Delahunt (now Massachusetts’ 10th district Representative) decided not to file charges.
Now, revelations that she and her husband were suspects in …Continue…

Disturbing news is emerging in the tragic case of University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) Assistant Biology Professor Amy Bishop, PhD whom is accused of shooting 6 and killing three colleagues at Shelby Science Building on the 3d floor during a faculty meeting, after she apparently was denied tenure, but not at that meeting.
During her apprehension, which was videotaped by teevee news reporters, Bishop, whom is a mother of four children, all whom are staying with relatives, could be heard saying, “It didn’t happen. There’s no way… they are still alive.”
