What Else Do You Need?

“… a few kind words, and a prayer.”
Those words have stayed with me for many years after the first time I ever heard them uttered as a young adult. A man, unknown to me, had said that in response to a question asked of him by a clerk, which was, “What else do you need?”
While I realize the gracious humor in them, they definitely convey a message. And there is always truth in humor, regardless of what topic it covers, which is why people often “jokingly” say things. It conveys truth.
As the years progressed, I have adopted that phrase as my own, and when asked by anyone if I need anything else, I often smile and say, “Yes… a few kind words and a prayer.”
Sometimes, in response, I’ve seen baffled looks, and yet at others, heard a hearty “you’ve got ’em!”
As I’ve gently explained, a few kind words and a prayer is as easy as this: “Looks like you’re having a good hair day, peace be with you,” or something similar.
Prayer, while many think of it as an ethereal request to deity, is merely a request, and it is not uncommon to hear that very word being used in courts of law, or legal documents. In fact, the origin and derivation of that word emerged circa the 13th century and meant to “ask earnestly.”
And a few kind words are equally easy, such as “that’s a lovely shirt/blouse,” or similar.
So, as you go about your day, think of me, won’t you, and offer a few kind words to me, and to others, and a prayer.
Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another…
Thanks!
