Respond To Your Deepest Calling

The birth of Saint John the Baptist, c.1680, by Luca Giordano (1634-1705), oil on canvas, from the Collection of Count von Bruhl, Dresden

Today is the Solemnity of the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist. The name John is derived from Hebrew, and broadly means “God’s gift.” Such was John the Baptist. John received the fullness of the Holy Spirit while he was still in the womb of his mother Elizabeth. And from the moment he came onto the preaching scene, he proved himself a powerful, captivating herald of Heaven. His bold, dramatic, austere, and uncompromising style is what many people had in mind when they hoped for a Messiah. But John understood that his role was to prepare the way for the One who was to come. His prophetic witness and commitment to his call are his legacy to us. Share in his gift by being true to your own Christian calling.
