Penis-Shaped Church in Dixon, IL Gets Attention
Scott Shepard from the Christian Science Church at 324 W. First St., Dixon, IL, and others are upset after a satellite image from Google Maps began to go viral, showing their new church had a rather unusual shape.
The Church recently moved into their new premises, but failed to notice the phallic design until one resident looked at the building from an aerial position using Google Earth and posted a screen shot online. The church said that “The new building was designed to keep… a marvelous oak tree… [which] has graced the church property for decades… as a focal point,” but has provided plenty of laughs in online communities.
Oddly enough, “Rising Up” is the motto for the phallus-shaped church.
But, no more! Church representatives say they intend to give the building a “fig leaf” as soon as possible. However, according to their listing on the YouCaring website, they’ve raised only $770 of their $24,100 goal, and the fundraiser is closed.
Established in 1903, the Christian Science religion teaches “love, growth and spiritual healing” based upon teachings from the Christian Bible along with the writings of founder Mary Baker Eddy.
On their Facebook page for Christian Science Dixon (also linked below), they explained that the “building [was] intentionally designed around a beautiful oak tree (instead of removing it)”, and that “southern exposure means it can be heated with the same energy generated by a single light bulb.” Their last Facebook post was dated November 9, 2014.

Wow! That’s simultaneously suggestive and quite revealing (no homo, tho).
