An as-yet-unidentified male suspect is in FBI custody after he shot a security guard in the lobby of the Family Research Council, a conservative Christian organization based in downtown D.C.
A suspect is in FBI custody after a security guard was shot in the lobby of the Family Research Council, a conservative Christian organization based in downtown D.C.
An FBI spokesperson is calling the guard a hero for preventing the shooter from hurting anyone else.
The shooter entered the building at 801 G Street NW displaying a gun at approximately 10:45 a.m. Wednesday, reported NBC4’s Derrick Ward. The guard confronted him and they had an altercation before the shooter fired.
The victim was struck in the arm. He was transported to a local hospital and is said to be “doing OK,” the FBI spokesperson said.
The suspect had a handgun and several magazines of ammunition when he was apprehended. He is from the D.C. region and was born in 1984, NBC’s Pete Williams has learned.
The suspect apparently took the Metro downtown, Williams reports. He parked his car at a Falls Church Metro station, although it’s not currently clear whether it was East or West Falls Church.
The suspect’s name has not yet been released.
“Our first concern is with our colleague who was shot today,” said Family Research Council President Tony Perkins. “Our concern is for him and his family.”
The Family Research Council promotes traditional marriage and other socially conservative issues, lobbying against gay rights, abortion and embryonic stem cell research.
It’s too early to tell whether the incident was connected to Family Research Council activities, said FBI and the Metropolitan Police Department, which are investigating jointly.
They are working with the U.S. Attorney’s Office to determine if this is a federal or local crime.
Initial reports had indicated that the shooting happened at at the National Portrait Gallery.
