A special thanks to Niki Doyle, of The Huntsville Times for mentioning “Antarctibama” and my blog in her story “Snowmaggedon, Antarctibama, Snowpocalypse … What are you calling this year’s snow event?” Published: Sunday, January 09, 2011, 11:28 PM, and Updated: Monday, January 10, 2011, 7:05 AM at

HUNTSVILLE, AL — The snark is strong in north Alabama.

Hours after schools and businesses started closing — but long before the first flakes settled — Huntsvillians were cracking jokes about the coming Snowpocalyse. The Huntsville Times has seen a good number of clever nicknames for this snow event, and even prompted the use of a rarely used weather term: thundersnow!

Panicky meteorologists, 24-hour media reports (yes, we know, The Times is just as guilty) and the rarity of this type of weather event are surely to blame for the reaction. So go ahead and poke a little fun at us, and leave a comment with your favorite snow event nickname.

Keep it relatively PG-13, please, but don’t be afraid to have a little fun. Speaking of fun, join the snow conversation on The Times’ Facebook page and Twitter feed.

Special thanks to Kevin L. Bardon for “Antarctibama.” Check out his other clever snow phrases on his blog, Warm Southern Breeze. Also thanks to gobamaua for the tip on thundersnow.
