Bama’s Benzs Burn in Brunswick

Posted by Warm Southern Breeze on Tuesday, March 16, 2010

Like the alliteration?

Several train carloads of Mercedes Benz SUVs made in Vance, AL caught fire Monday afternoon and burned in Brunswick, GA at the Georgia Ports Authority Colonels Island shipping terminal.

The 2:30PM EST fire on the elevated wooden trestle in the middle of the Glynn County marsh was the second in nearly six years, and made extinguishing the flames difficult for firefighters.

It took over 40 firefighters two hours of hauling in water to contain the fire to two car transports loaded with M-Class Mercedes-Benz SUVs for export. The heat was so intense that it warped the heavy steel rails making it difficult to unhook and move the railroad cars.

Although the shipping terminal handles a variety of items, ranging from heavy equipment to bulk grain, they specialize in motor vehicle cargo.
