How Food Marketers Made Butter the Enemy

Wednesday, April 9, 2014 3:00 AM PDT

James McWilliams—a historian who has made a name for himself in prestigious publications like the New York Times and The Atlantic for his contrarian defenses of the food industry—is back at it. In an item published last week in the excellent Pacific Standard, McWilliams uses the controversy over a recent study of saturated fat as a club with which to pummel food industry critics like the Times‘ Mark Bittman.

Here’s what happened: A group including Harvard and Cambridge researchers analyzed 72 studies and concluded that there’s no clear evidence that ditching saturated fat (the kind found mainly in butter, eggs, and meat) for the monounsaturated and polyunsaturated kind (found in fish and a variety of vegetable oils) delivers health benefits.

Posted by Warm Southern Breeze on Wednesday, March 7, 2012

Read on to see what I mean.

Not many folks may recall Alabama‘s state song, which lyric reads, “Alabama, Alabama, I will aye be true to thee. From thy Southern shore where groweth, by the sea the orange tree.”

As a kid, I kinda’ thought it was Read the rest of this entry »

Infant Formula Linked to Obesity

Posted by Warm Southern Breeze on Tuesday, February 8, 2011

It’s official!

Here is yet another reason to AVOID using baby formula, and use the God-given, all-natural, built-in, milk-producing, baby-feeding device known as the “breast”!

The reader should take careful note to the headline I wrote, versus the headline the other news writer chose. It may be a fine line to discern, but as you’ll read, you will understand why I chose mine – which I believe accurate. The other headline is misleading.

The timing of solid foods didn’t increase the odds of becoming obese in youngsters who were breast-fed,” but infants who stopped breast feeding before 4 months, or were not breast fed at all were “linked to a sixfold increase in the risk of obesity.” …Click HERE to read the story…

Placebos help, even when patients know about them

Wed Dec 22, 2010
5:50PM EST WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Placebos can help patients feel
better, even if they are fully aware they are taking a sugar pill, according to researchers who reported Wednesday on an unusual experiment aimed at better understanding the “placebo effect.”

Researchers reported in the Public Library of Science journal PLoS ONE that nearly 60 percent of patients with Irritable bowel syndrome reported they felt better after …Click here to see if you feel better too!…

After all… you can only do two things at once.

Posted by Warm Southern Breeze on Friday, April 16, 2010

What!?

You can only do one thing at a time?

Welcome to the real world.

With a view toward reality and efficiency, the buzzword “multi-tasking” is on its way out.

In a study to be published this week in “Science,” a scholarly journal, neurological researchers at Universite Pierre et Marie Curie in Paris, France have discovered the brain’s Medial Frontal Cortex (MFC) divides the brain in half when it comes to performing tasks.

Automatically, that means that consciously or cognitively, our brains can only allow us do two things simultaneously.

Study researcher Etienne Koechlin said, …Continue…
